Which would have a shorter retention time using prep GC? 3-pentanol or 2-heptanone and why

Answer #1

Gas-chromatography is generally useful technique for analysis of separation of volatile components.

It may be solid-gas (adsorption based) Or liquid/gas chromatography(Partition based)

It is generally part of column chromatography.

Retention time is the amount of time of the component spend on the column after injected sample and up to elution.

Since more volatile compound is eluted firstly therefore its retention time isvery lessthan less volatile.

Out of 3-pentanol and 2-heptanone, 2-heptanone is more volatile therefore it has shorter R. T.

3-pentanol is an alcohol, has intermolecular hydrogen bond, B.P.high than ketone.

In a normal-phase partition column, a solute was found to have a retention time of 29.1 min, and an unretained sample had a retention time of 1.05 min when the mobile phase was 50% by volume chloroform and 50% n-hexane. calculate a) k for the solute and b) a solvent composition that would bring k down to a value of about 10.
