What is the percent mass of Copper in each of the following compounds?

a. CuSO4·5H2O

b. CuBr2

c. CuCl2∙2H2O

d. Cu(NO3)2∙3H2O

e. Cu(C2H3O2)2∙H2O

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. CuSO4·5H2O

MW Cu = 63.5 g

MW of CuSO4 = 159.609

MW of H2O = 18

total MW = (159.609 + 18*5) = 249.609

% Cu = 63.5/249.609 * 100 = 25.3% is Copper

b. CuBr2

MW CuBr2 = 223.37

% Cu= 63.5/223.37 *100 = 28.42 %

c. CuCl2∙2H2O

MW of CuCl2*2H2O = (134.45 +2*18) =170.45

% Cu = 63.5/170.45 *100 = 37.2543%

d. Cu(NO3)2∙3H2O

MW of Salt hydrated = 187.56 + 3*18 = 241.56

%Cu = 63.5/241.56 * 100 = 26.287 %

e. Cu(C2H3O2)2∙H2O

MW of hydrate = 199.6493 +18 = 217.6493

%CU = 63.5/217.6493*100 = 29.175%
