NH3 is used to prepare HNO3. Oxidation of NH3 to produce NO is the first step. What is the standard enthalpy change for this reaction?

Answer #1

answer : H = - 24.8 Kcal/mol

Oxidation of ammonia is carried out in a catalytic chamber in which one part of ammonia and eight parts by volume of oxygen are reacted.

4 NH3 + 5 O2   ----------------> 5 NO + 6 H2O      H = - 24.8 Kcal/mole

H = - 24.8 Kcal/mol

Oxidization of ammonia is a reversible and exothermic reaction. Therefore according to Le- chatelier's principle,a decrease in temperature favours the reaction in forward direction. In primary oxidization 95% of ammonia is converted into nitric oxide (NO)

Modern processes for the production of nitric acid are based upon the oxidation of ammonia synthesized via the Haber reaction. The first step of the oxidation process is the reaction of NH3 with O2 over a platinum catalyst to produce nitric oxide: 4NH3 + 5O2 ------> 4NO + 6H2O Under a given set of reactor conditions, 90% conversion of NH3 is obtained with a feed of 40 moles/hr NH3 and 60 moles/hr O2.
