I need to perform a separation/purification scheme with a mixture of 10% glycine, 40% benzophenone, and 50% phthalic acid. No specific solvents are given. Please help!
You have various ways to carry out the purification and separation.
You can go for chromatographic techniques by dissolving all the components in ethanol. This is one of the most ideal solvents available. It has both polar OH group and the hydrophobic hydrocarbon side chain. This is why it dissolves most of the available polar and non-polar organic substances.
You can also see the TLC for the mixture and compare with the original Rf values of the three components.
We know that all three components are white solids. You can add diethyl ether to the mixture. Benzophenone and phthalic acid will dissolve in it and glycine will not.
You can go for hypenated techniques of chromatography combined with spectroscopy for both purification, separation and identification.
(ticks are for soluble and cross for insoluble)
Hope the choice of solvent will help you.
Have a good day!
