In the above reaction the oxidation state of Al changes from 0 to +3

4 aluminiun atoms in the left hand side are converted to 4 Al 3+ ions in the right hand side

So totally 4x 3 = 12 electrons are transferred for 2 formula units of the product

For 1 formula unit of product the number of electrons transferred are 12/ 2 = 6
