The balanced chemical equation of the reaction between a drying agent, thionyl chloride, SOCI2, and water is given below. SOCI2(1) + H2O(1)- SO2(g) + 2HCI(g). Calculate the mass of water consumed when 35.0g of SOCI2 is reacted. Steps to solve this problem: what is the molar ratio of SOCI2 to H2O?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

its a balanced chemical reaction ,so the moles of water consumed is equal to moles of SOCl2

The molar ratio of SOCI2(1) and    H2O(1) is    1:1

      SOCI2(1) +    H2O(1)    --------> SO2(g) +    2HCI(g).

    35/129

   .2713 moles

so the moles of water needed = .2713 =>   Mass of water needed = .2713x18 = 4.88 gram

Constants | Periodic Table The coefficients in a balanced chemical equation provide the mole-to-mole stoichiometry among the reactants and products. The molar mass (in g/mol) can be used as the conversion factor between moles and the mass of a substance. Thus, the balanced equation and molar masses can be used in conjunction with one another to calculate the masses involved in a reaction.
