1.     Predict the outcome of an alcohol oxidation reaction

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are three types of alcohols

1. Primary

2. Secondary

3. Tertiary

1. Primary Alcohols

Primary alcohols can be oxidised to either aldehydes or carboxylic acids depending on the reaction conditions. when the formation of carboxylic acids, the alcohol is first get oxidised to an aldehyde which is then be oxidised further to the coressponding carboxylic acid.

  • Chromic acid which is used in water will oxidize the primary alcohols to carboxylic acid as major product.
  • PCC or PDC, which are used in dichloromethane, allow the oxidation to be stopped at the intermediate aldehyde.

2. Secondary Alcohols

Secondary alcohols can be oxidised to ketones but no further oxidation will occur

3.Tertiary alcohols

Tertiary alcohols can not oxidised by any oxidizing reagent since there is no hydrogen available in alcohol carbon. There is no reaction whatsoever.

determine the oxidation states of manganese and nickel on both the reactant and predict side of the reaction. Use the activity series to determine whether the following reaction will occur or is non spontaneous. Then if it did in fact occur spontaneously what would be the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in the reaction. Mn(s) + NiCl2 (aq) ----> MnCl2 (aq) + Ni (s)

Based on the solubility guidelines predict the outcome of the following reactions. If you think a precipitation reaction will occur, balance the reaction and write the complete and net ionic equations of the reaction. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is a liver enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. The catalyzed reaction in the liver is zero-order with a rate constant of 0.17 molh−1. Halogenated hydrocarbons act as inhibitors to the ADH by binding strongly to the enzyme. The halogenated hydrocarbons can persist in the liver for days following exposure. Suppose that a worker who is exposed to halogenated hydrocarbons leaves work with 40 % of their ADH inhibited. The worker decides to have...

please (TYPE) the answers 1. This week’s oxidation reaction is considered a “Green Chemistry” reaction because of its use of Ozone as the oxidizing agent. In the late 1990s, two chemists, Paul Anastas, and John Warner, co-authored a book regarding how to perform chemical transformations with non-hazardous materials. They created a list of 12 Green Chemistry Principles. Using a textbook or internet, list the 12 principles of Green Chemistry. 2.
