Why does electrowinning require more energy than electrorefining
Electrowinning – is a process of depositing pure metal at catode by passing electric current.
The metal ions are present in the solution form and as the deposition starts the metal ion concentration in the solution decreases causing a depletion zone, which requires more energy to complete the deposition.
In case of electrorefining, anode is the source of metal ion (impure metal is used as anode), As the electric current is passed, metal ion released from anode travels to cathode and deposited over cathode. Concentration of metal ion in the bulk (or solution is maintained during the process)
