1. Explain what effects each of the following improper packing techniques for the melting point tube would have on the observed point range. (a) too much sample; (b) sample packed too loosely.

2. What two effects does adding an impurity have on the melting point range of a compound?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1.a if too much sample is used in melting point analysis, it tends to increase the melting point of the compound and larger samples tend to melt unevenly so melting range will also be increased

b. If sample is packed loosely leaving more gaps in between then it will melt fast giving a false lower melting point reading.

2. Impurities will have 2 effects

First it will decrease the melting point of the compound by weakening of its lattice and second it will increase the range of melting point values.

What effect does recrystallization expected to have on the melting point of your product? Briefly explain why. I know that recrystillzation is a method to purify a desired product and depending how well or poor the process was done, it will affecting the melting point range. The presence of an impurity can affect the observed melting point of a sample in two different ways: certain impurities can have only one, only the other, or both effects depending on what the impurity is and how much is present. What are the two effects (that is, how would the observed melting range change compared to the literature value of the pure substance)? a. b. Each of the following statements contains a blunder. Explain in each case what is wrong. (a) There is a high correlation between the age of American workers and their occupation. The relationship between age and American workers' occupation has a curved relationship and correlation measures the strength of only the linear relationship between two variables. Because occupation has a categorical (nominal) scale, we cannot compute the correlation between occupation and anything. Occupation of American workers can not be correlated with...
