Which term would you expect to be the largest positive number: delta Hsolvent, delta Hsolute or delta Hmix?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

First of all, the enthalpy change depends largely on the compounds involved in the process. solute would be the largest positive number. This is because solute would be normally a solid compound and the molecules would be strongly packed with the help of strong interaction forces like electrostatic interaction. So a high amount of energy should be provided to break the interaction between the solute molecules.

solvent would also be positive since energy has to be provided to break the interaction between the solvent molecules. mix can be positive or negative depending upon the interaction between the solvent and the solute.

However, solute would have the highest positive value.
