Which would you expect to increase in copy number in a genome more quickly, a DNA transposon or a retrotransposon? Provide a reason for your answer.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Retrotransposons copy number will increase more rapidly.

Reason- retrotransposons moves by copy and paste mechanism. It means primary retrotransposons will produce and mRNA that will get converted into DNA (copy) then it integrates into genome (paste). This increases the number of retrotransposons.

Transposons move by cut and paste mechanism. It means whatever the number of transposons are present they will remain constant but they can move through out the genome.

You are purifying bacterial chromosomal DNA to send off for genome sequencing. The estimated genome size of your organism is 4 Mbp and you know that the average MW of a base pair is 660 Daltons. You have isolated 1 microg of genomic DNA, how many moles of DNA are in your sample? If you resuspended the chromosomal DNA in 50 microL, what would be the final concentration of the DNA?

The Conference Board published information on why companies expect to increase the number of part-time jobs and reduce full-time positions. Eighty-one percent of the companies said the reason was to get a flexible workforce. Suppose 200 companies that expect to increase the number of part-time jobs and reduce full-time positions are identified and contacted. (a) What is the expected number of these companies that would agree that the reason is to get a flexible workforce? (b) What is the probability...

a. Would you expect virus growing in a medium containing 35S to synthesize DNA containing 35S? A.No B.Yes C.Yes, but only a little b. Which statement best reflects your reasoning? A.DNA is made up of sugar, phosphate, and nitrogenous bases. None of these molecules contain sulfur, so 35S wouldn’t become part of the DNA. B.I think DNA might contain sulfur, so 35S could become part of DNA made by virus in a 35S solution. C.35S sticks to any biomolecule, so...
