Which one of the following solutions contains the greatest molarity of nitrate ions ? (1) 1.00 M sodium nitrate (2) 0.50 M chromium(III) nitrate (3) 2.00 M ammonium nitrate (4) 0.75 M aluminum nitrate (5) 1.00 M nickel(II) nitrate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(1) 1.00 M sodium nitrate

sodium nitrate is NaNO3

[NO3-] = [NaNO3] = 1.00 M

(2) 0.50 M chromium(III) nitrate

chromium(III) nitrate is Cr(NO3)3

[NO3-] = 3*[Cr(NO3)3] = 3*0.50 = 1.50 M

(3) 2.00 M ammonium nitrate

ammonium nitrate is NH4NO3

[NO3-] = [NH4NO3] = 2.00 M

(4) 0.75 M aluminum nitrate

aluminum nitrate Al(NO3)3

[NO3-] = 3*[Al(NO3)3] = 3*0.75 = 2.25 M

(5) 1.00 M nickel(II) nitrate

nickel(II) nitrate is Ni(NO3)2

[NO3-] = 2*[Ni(NO3)2] = 2*1.00 = 2.00 M

So,

maximum nitrate concentration is for 0.75 M aluminum nitrate

Answer: 0.75 M aluminum nitrate
