Find the pH of each of the following solutions of mixtures of acids.

a. 0.180M in HCHO2 and 0.22M in HC2H3O2

b. 6.0

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Formic acid HCHO2            pKa = 3.75             Ka = 1.77.10-4

Acetic acid HC2H3O2      pKa = 4.76               Ka = 1.76.10-5

Hydrocyanic acid               pKa = 9.21              Ka = 6.17.10-10

Theorethical background.

The stronger acid inhibits the dissociation of the weaker one.

In this case, acetic acid is less dissociated in the presence of formic acid. Think to Le Chatelier
