Why is it necessary to perform the competing nucleophiles reactions under acidic conditions?
Ans :
When the nucleophilic substitution reactions are carried , the -OH group of the alcohol behaves as a poor leaving group , due to which it is difficult to remove the group from the alcohol.
When the reactions are performed in the acidic conditions , the alcohol gets protonated by the acid , and its -OH group (poor leaving group) changes into H2O (good leaving group).
So the leaving group leaves the compound easily and the reactions are performed easily , and hence the competing nucleophile reactions are carried out under acidic conditions.
