nitrogen and helium which is more desirable gas to store with KCuCl3 and why

Homework Answers

Answer #1

KCuCl3 can be readily hydrolyzed in moist Air

2 KCuCl3(s) + 4 H2O(g) CuCl2 2H2O(s) + K2CuCl4 2H2O(s)

Basically KCuCl3 has to be stored in an inert atmosphere.

If you compare both nitrogen and Helium are inert to reaction with KCuCl3 but since helium is a very light gas it is better to store this material in nitrogen as it will complete prevent the entry of oxygen or moisture in the container that it is stored in.

Helium being very light will rise up when a more dense gas like oxygen or oxygen with moisture tries to enter into the container and so it is possibl that the gas can enter from the lower portion of the container.
