Unlike FTIR, AES is used as a quantitative method. Why would this be a poor qualitative method? Why is the method good for quantitative analysis?
In case of AES spectroscopy a sum of number of radiations reaching the detector is analyzed and then one particular wavelength corresponding to the metal of interest is quantified for analysis and gives accurate results. The intensity of radiations reaching the detector at a given time is weak and not enough for qualitative or quantitative analysis. Since for qualitative test all the radiations will reach the detector be analyzed, weak signal intensity limits its use and not suitable for qualitative analysis.
