write the mechanism of how sodium bicarbonate is synthesized?
Sodium bicarbonate is synthesised by Solvay process. (IN
LAB).The process
as follows
To the brine solution(NaCl) Add dry ice(CO2) and Ammonia
NaCl(aq) +CO2(s) + H2O +NH3(aq) ----> NH4CI(aq)+
NaHCO3(s)
Dryice helps to cool the mixture.Since NaHCO3 IS less soluble
at
lower temperature can be crystallized by fractional crystalliz
ation method
While ammonium chloride remain in the solution.
During the process NH4HCO3 (ammonium bicarbonate) forms as side
product
which can be separated by heating which yield gaseous
products.
NH4HCO3(s) -----> NH3(g) +H2O(g) + CO2(g)
