household bleach contains sodium hypochlorite, NaOCl. For what ion might you test bleach and what observations would confirm the results of that ion's presence?

Answer #1

Bleach has two ions, cation is Na+ which can be tested by flame test.

Mix small amount of substance with concentrated HCl and heated on a bursen burner on a nichrome wire. Appearence of golden yellow flame confirms presence of Na+ ion.

Anion in bleach is OCl- is tested by addition of I2 to the bleach. OCl- in bleach is in equilibrium with Cl- and OH- in solution and gives Cl2. Addition of iodide to it, forms I2 (purple color) which reacts further to give brown coloration to solution due to I3- formation. This confirms presence of OCl-.

The concentration of an aqueous solution of NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite; the active ingredient in household bleach) can be determined by a redox titration with iodide ion in acidic solution: OCl−(aq)+2I−(aq)+2H+(aq)→Cl−(aq)+I2(aq)+H2O(l) . Assume that the blue spheres in the buret represent I− ions, the red spheres in the flask represent OCl- ions, the concentration of the I−I− ions in the buret is 0.175 MM , and the volumes in the buret and the flask are identical.
