Question

The concentration of an aqueous solution of NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite; the active ingredient in household bleach)...

The concentration of an aqueous solution of NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite; the active ingredient in household bleach) can be determined by a redox titration with iodide ion in acidic solution: OCl−(aq)+2I−(aq)+2H+(aq)→Cl−(aq)+I2(aq)+H2O(l) . Assume that the blue spheres in the buret represent I− ions, the red spheres in the flask represent OCl- ions, the concentration of the I−I− ions in the buret is 0.175 MM , and the volumes in the buret and the flask are identical.

A) What is the concentration of NaOCl in the flask?

B) What percentage of the I− solution in the buret must be added to the flask to react with all the OCl− ions?

Household bleach is an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). For a kinetics experiment, 10 mL of a 4%(w/w) bleach solution was diluted in a 100 mL volumetric flask. 5 mL of this diluted solution is added to 5 mL of dye in a reaction vessel. What is the concentration of bleach (in M) in the reaction vessel? Assume the density of the bleach solution is 1.11 g/mL.
