true or false??? if methane decomposition occurs at 1000K and 10 atm, the equilibrium mole fraction of H2 does not exceed 60%

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The answer is False.

When one mole of methane decomposes thermally it produces one mole of carbon and 2 moles of hydrogen gas, the equation is written as follows.

CH4 -----------------> C + 2H2

Here the total number of moles of Hydrogen at equilibrium could be only C and 2H2 gas because all of the methane is converted to Carbon and hydrogen gas. So now it is only the mole fraction of C and H2 in such case H2 has two moles and Carbon has one mole. So the mole fraction of Hydrogen is 2/3*100%= 66.6% which is greater than 60%

A common concept that crops up in a Dalton's Law context is mole fraction. Suppose you had equal moles of two different gases in a mixture. Then the mole fraction for each would be 0.50. The mole fraction for each gas is simply the moles of that gas divided by the total moles in the mixture. Seems simple enough. How does it relate to Dalton's Law? Answer: the mole fraction also gives the fraction of the total pressue each gas...
