Question

which are most soluble and which are the least soluble: magnesium chloride, 2-pentanol, methane and propane?

which are most soluble and which are the least soluble:

magnesium chloride, 2-pentanol, methane and propane?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The most solulble would be the salt magnesium chloride, because it is an ionic compound and quite polar.

Next would be the 2-pentanol because alcohols are rather soluble is water.

Now, both propane and methane are completely non-polar, but propane would be a little more water-friendly b/ it has more H's than methane, allowing for more Hydrogen-bonding Intermolecular forces between water and itself...so methane is the least soluble.

From most to least, it's a, b, c, d

The salt magnesium chloride is soluble in water. When 0.710 g MgCl2 is dissolved in 111.00 g water, the temperature of the solution increases from 25.00 °C to 27.47 °C. Based on this observation, calculate the dissolution enthalpy, ΔdissH, of MgCl2. Assume that the specific heat capacity of the solution is 4.184 J g-1 °C-1 and that the energy transfer to the calorimeter is negligible.
