1. Write the complete mechanism for the formation Nylon-4,10 using sebacoyl chloride as one of the starting materials. You only have to show the formation of one amide bond.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Formation of Nylon-4,10 polymer requires one 10 C substrate which we fixed as sebacoyel chloride(SC) and anathor 4 C substrate necessarily be the Tetramethylene diamine.(TMD) (Short forms are not standerd. just for simplicity used)

Lone pair of electron on N of TMD attacks the carbonyl C od SC and subsequently losses Cl ion which deprotonate -NH2- and forms a amide bond.Hence the formation of first amide bond.

The compound formed still at extremities has reactive functionality which continues the reaction in similar manner and extensively long chain results and finally a polymer Nylon-4.10 formed.

Please show the synthesis mechanism of nylon 6,6 from adipoyl chloride and 1,6- hexanediamine that includes THREE additions of either the adipoyl chloride or the 1,6- hexanediamine to the growing polymer chain. It is very important that their is THREE repeating additions in the polymer chain. Thank you!
