Assuming all of the metal ions are from nitrate compounds (ie Pb(NO3)2 aq)

what would be the balanced overall equation and the net ionic equation for the reactions occurring when HCl is added to each of the metal solutions.

(3 overall equations and 3 NIEs)

Thank you

Answer #1

Let assume three metal ions such as Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ are from nitrate compounds like Cu(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2 and Pb(NO3)2, respectively.

The Overall reaction of Cu(NO3)2 with HCl is

Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq)= CuCl2 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)

The Net ionic reaction of Cu(NO3)2 with HCl is

Cu2+ + NO32- + 2H+ + 2Cl- = CuCl2 (s) + 2H+ + NO32-

Cu2+ + 2Cl- = CuCl2 (s)

The Overall reaction of Zn(NO3)2 with HCl is

Zn(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq)= ZnCl2 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)

The Net ionic reaction of Zn(NO3)2 with HCl is

Zn2+ + NO32- + 2H+ + 2Cl- = ZnCl2 (s) + 2H+ + NO32-

Zn2+ +  2Cl- = ZnCl2 (s)

The Overall reaction of Pb(NO3)2 with HCl is

Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq)= PbCl2 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)

The Net ionic reaction of Pb(NO3)2 with HCl is

Pb2+ + NO32- + 2H+ + 2Cl- = PbCl2 (s) + 2H+ + NO32-

Pb2+ +  2Cl- = PbCl2 (s)

Net Ionic Equations In many chemical reactions of two or more compounds, ions are present in the solution that do not participate in the reaction. These ions, known as spectator ions, can be removed from the chemical equation describing the reaction. A chemical equation that has the spectator ions removed is known as a net ionic equation. Reactions between ionic compounds often result in the precipitation of an insoluble compound. Spectator ions and precipitation products of a chemical reaction can...
