Question

why is atactic polymer incapable of crystallizing

why is atactic polymer incapable of crystallizing

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The individual units op a polymer can be arranged in two manars. One in which there is regular sequence of individual units. This regulr sequence is called stereoregularity. In othe case the individual units do not possess stereoregularity. Atactic polymers belong to the later category. Atactic polymers lack stereoregularity which is essential for a polymer to crystallize. Due to this random sequence of individual units the Atactic polymers do not crystallize.

You must select a high stiffness polymer. How do you expect the tensile modulus of the following polymers compare: 1) Atactic PVC having an average molecular weight of 500,000 g/mol 2) Isotactic PVC having an average molecular weight of 500,000 g/mol a) 2 will have a greater tensile modulus than 1 b) 1 will have a greater tensile modulus than 2 c) They exhibit about the same tensile modulus

Consider two imaginary polymers. Polymer A has persistence length 50 nm. Polymer B has persistence length 2 nm (and hence an effective segment length 1/25 as great as A’s). Imagine that you could take two tiny pairs of pliers, grab a polymer at two points separated by 10 nm, and bend it. A. Which polymer would be easier to bend? Why? B.
