You must select a high stiffness polymer. How do you expect the tensile modulus of the following polymers compare:

1) Atactic PVC having an average molecular weight of 500,000 g/mol

2) Isotactic PVC having an average molecular weight of 500,000 g/mol

a) 2 will have a greater tensile modulus than 1
b) 1 will have a greater tensile modulus than 2
c) They exhibit about the same tensile modulus

Homework Answers

Answer #1

b) 1 will have greater tensile modulus than 2

Atactic polymers are amorphous in nature while isotactic polymers are semi-crystalline. This is because atactic polymers have a random arrangement of molecules while isotactic polymers have semi-ordered arrangement. Due to this structure atactic polymers are stiff compared to isotatic polymers.

Polymer composite materials have gained popularity because they have high strength to weight ratios and are relatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture. However, their nondegradable nature has prompted development of environmentally friendly composites using natural materials. An article reported that for a sample of 10 specimens with 2% fiber content, the sample mean tensile strength (MPa) was 51.9 and the sample standard deviation was 1.2. Suppose the true average strength for 0% fibers (pure cellulose) is known to be 48...

If the experiment has been done correctly, you will have discovered that the density of water has a maximum value at a temperature of 4 °C. The density of water is often quoted as being 1.000 g cm-3 (or 1000 kg m-3) at this temperature. The density of ice at 0 °C is approximately 0.917 g cm-3 (or 917 kg m-3). An iceberg will therefore float because it is less dense than the fluid it is immersed in. Consider an...
