What is the number of formula units in a 8.64 mol sample of Ca2O?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ca2O does not exist. Calcium oxide is CaO (calcium in +2 state and Oxygen is in -2 state).

According to Avagadro's number 1 mole of any substance is equal to 6.022 x 1023 atoms, molecules, formula units, ions and particles etc.

1 mole of CaO = 6.022 x 1023 formula units

8.64 mol sample of CaO = 8.64 mol x 6.022 x 1023/mol formula units

= 5.203 x 1024 formula units.

Answer: the number of formula units in a 8.64 mol sample of CaO = 5.203 x 1024 formula units.

A sample contains 0.178 moles of tin and 0.172 moles of chlorine. What is the formula of the compound. My thoughts are: 0.178 mol Sn=0.178/0.172= 1.03 0.172 mol Cl =0.172/0.172=1.00 Therefore it should be SnCl, however should each calculation be multiplied by 2 since there are two elements? Making this actually Sn2Cl2. If I have calculated this incorrectly please show exactly how this problem should be approached.
