how do I know if a chemical species would be atracted
to a magnetic field ? and how do I determine this?
Solution :-
when the chemical species have unpaired electrons in it then we call it as paramegnetic and when it do not have any unpaired electron then we call it as diamagnetic
the paramgnetic species can be attracted towards a magnetic field while the diamagnetic species are not attracted towards magnetic field.
lets take example of the
O and Ne
electronic configuration of the oxygen and Ne is as follows
O = 1s2 2s2 2p4
Ne = 1s2 2s2 2p6
the Ne atom have all electrons paired while the oxygen have 2 unpaired electrons in the 2p orbital
so the O is paramagnetic and Ne is diamagnetic.
