How do you know what the chemical shift is indicating?

How do you know what the chemical shift is indicating?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:

The chemical shift of a nucleus is the difference between the resonance frequency of the nucleus and a standard in a magnetic field. This could be calculated with the formula:

where

  • d = chemical shift (ppm)
  • usample = resonance frequency of sample (Hz)
  • ustd = resonance frequency of standard reference (Hz)
  • uspec = frequency of spectrometer (MHz)

The chemical shift of a nucleus depends of the chemical environment of the nucleus. This means that nucleus with identical chemical environments will have the same chemical shift. On the other hand,  nucleus with different chemical environments will have different chemical shifts
