What is the process of phase change going on the external surface of the cold finger during sublimation experiment and what is the role of the ice cold water in the cold finger?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Cold finger is the instrument used in sublimation experiment to generate very low temperatures

sublimation is the process of converting solid into gas/vapour state directly without liquid phase. Some material undergoes sublimation process during seperation from a mixture of compounds.

Cold finger consists of continoues inflow and out flow of coolant(ice cold water) which maintains low temperatures onthe surfaces when ever the sublimed substance coming contact with cold external surface it undergoes deposition on the external surface by crystallization or some other process due to low temperature. Here the role of ice cold water is to act as coolant for maintaining low temperature surfaces .

To understand the role of latent in phase changes, consider the energy required to convert a 5.0g cube of ice at -40C to steam at 200C. How can you evaluate the amount of heat energy required during phase change from -40C ice changed to 0C ice, 5.0g of ice melted to water at 0.0C, 0C water changes to 100C, water converted to steam at 100.0C, and steam at 100C changed to 200C?

Heat, q, is energy transferred between a system and its surroundings. For a process that involves a temperature change q=m?Cs??T where Cs is specific heat and m is mass. Heat can also be transferred at a constant temperature when there is a change in state. For a process that involves a phase change q=n??H where, n is the number of moles and ?H is the enthalpy of fusion, vaporization, or sublimation. Calculate the entropy change for the process of taking 1.00 kg of water from a temperature of -26 C to +42 C keeping in mind that ice melts at 0 C. Assume a constant pressure of 1 bar and a temperature independent heat capacity within a given phase (Cpm = 37 J/Kmol for the solid and Cpm = 75 J/Kmol for the liquid state).
