Prototype is a rudimentary working sample or model or just a simulation of actual product on which the Other forms are developed.

Prototyping is about validation of the design of the actual product and it is trying to prepare the model of the actual product and it is a basis of the project on trial version and it can also be said to be the conceptualization of the real project into the real life so it can lead to transformation of various virtual ideas into the real ideas.

Prototypes are generally developed during pre introduction page of product life cycle because these will be leading to mostly conceptualization of the actual product and it will be leading to introduction and pre introduction phase of the product life cycle.
