Dry cleaners used to use the solvent perchloroethylene as the method of choice

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Perchlorethylene is the most common solvent, the standard for cleaning performance . It is most effective cleaning solvent . It is thermally stable ,recyclable and has low toxicity . It is therefore used for oil based stains which can't be removed by water until high temperature is provided which may destroy the fabric of the cloth.

Other examples of dry cleaning agents are trichloroethylene, supercritical CO2 , hydrocarbons etc. But perchloroethylene is still the most commonly used solvent by dry cleaners because of its amazing properties.
