Collecting an FTIR spectrum
a. is a great way to find the molecular weight of a compound
b. is an eaasy wat to determine the carbon backbone of an organic compound
c. is a routine wat to determine the functional groups that are present in a compound
d .requires that the compound is in the gas phase
e. requires the sample to be a solid
ANSWER:
FTIR spectrum will only provide the information about the functional groups present in a compound in the form of wave numbers (cm-1) which are characteristic for each and every functional group such as -OH/-NH will show absorption peaks around 3400 cm-1 and carbonyl compounds will show absorption peaks around 1720 cm-1 ± 60 depending on the type of attachment to carbonyl group.
FTIR won’t provide any information about molecular weight (option-A) and also about the carbon backbone (option-B). FTIR sample need not be either a solid (option-E) nor a gaseous sample (option-D) as the sample can be analyzed in the liquid state also.
