Which oxidation number of Cr is lowest among the following?

a. K2Cr2O6

b. Cr2O5

c. CrN

d.CrCO3

e. Cr metal bar

Homework Answers

Answer #1

here the oxidation state of elements other than Cr ar(O = -2 , N=-3 , K =1 , CO3(2-)= -2)

1.in K2Cr2O7 = oxidation state of chromium , ( oxidation state of K = 1 , O = -2 , Cr=X)

now 2*1+2*X+7*(-2) =0 (because compound is totally neutral )

X = 14-2/2 = 6

2 . Cr2O5 = (Cr = x , O=-2)

2*x + 5*(-2) = 0 (because compound is totally neutral)

x= 10/2 = 5

3. CrN (oxidation state of Cr=x , N=-3)

x+1*(-3) = 0 (because compound is neutral )

x=3

4. CrCO3 ( oxidation state of Cr =x , CO3 (2-) = -2)

x+(-2) = 0

x= 2

5 . here chromium is present in its elemental state . so here oxidation state is 0 .as all elements have
