I will be given an unknown in an organic chemistry lab. one solid and the other is liquid and I have to identify what is the unknown. I can do IR on liquid unknown only, and the melting point on solid.I need to identify the functional groups I have in both unknowns on the first day how can I do that? I'm not sure where to start and how to go on?

Answer #1

You can easily identify the functional groups with the help of the IR spectroscopy. IR spectroscopy is best technique to identify the functional group. You can do the NMR spectroscopy also for checking the functional group. For solid sample beyond the melting point you can do the various functional group test to identify the functional group in the solid samples like alcoholic group test, amino group test, carboxylic acid group test, phenolic group test, ketonic group test, unsaturation test, charing test like ninhydrine and valine charing test.

Hello I have a question about organic chemistry 1 lab. When doing chemical tests the Br2 in CCl4. Shows a positive result for alkenes and alkynes? And negative test results mean a alkene and/or arene? I’m told in lab that we do not have potassium permanganate so we cannot use it. The second test that were told to preform if nothing else is shown on the IR is a halide test. I hope this makes sense. I’m just confused about...

I'm doing a chemistry lab, where I have to determine the molar mass of an unknown after finding the vapor density. So basically, I have to put 3 test-tubes in a hot water bath, after measuring their volume, and mass the test tube + condensed unknown. So, if, hypothetically, there was some unknown liquid left in the test tube when we were massing the test tube after we heated them, how would the experimental molar mass change? Would it increase...

This Question is from an Organic Chemistry Lab entitled: Natural Product Isolation: Isolation of Eugenol from Oil of Cloves a.) How could acid/base extraction be used to isolate the aspirin in Excedrin from the other active ingredients? This will take some serious thought, make sure to consider the acidity of the various functional groups b.) Eugenol and eugenyl acetate are very similar molecules. Why can these molecules be separated by liquid-liquid extraction in spite of thesesimilarities? c.) If you were...

I have a lab practical today and I have to do the following but I'm not sure how and how do I analyze my result can someone explain please? since it is an openbook so it would be helpful if someone can explain the steps! Hi, organic chemistry folks! Can someone edit my short paragraph about my experiment on simple distillation of an unknown organic liquid. It needs to be concise, clear, intepreted, and contain relevant values. Hopefully, I did those but I'm just having trouble wording it all together. Thanks! The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to purify and identify a volatile organic liquid of unknown #3 by performing a simple distillation technique. The purified unknown #3 was characterized via BP and IR....

For my organic chem lab, we need to do a serial dilution of a sample so that it can be used in a mass spec. If we start out with .1g of an unknown compound in 10ml of DCM, how can we get it to 1000ppb concentration? I have never worked with ppb and don't know how to do the calculations, please explain step by step.
