organic chemistry unsaturation tests
We did a lab for functional group analysis and I missed the lab but stil need to complete the report. i do not understand it and we have a quiz on it tonight so if anyone could help that would be amazing
we did
1) bromine unsaturation test
2) Baeyer unsaturation test
3) tollens reagant test for aldehydes
4) chromic acid test for aldehydes
5) idoform test for carbonyls
we test butanol with chromic acid and then heat, formaldehyde (with chromic acid, then heat, and then after and tollens), acetone with 3 drops NaOH and Iodine, hexane with bromine and heat, hexane with Kmno4 and then heated
i have to say what reacted positively and indicate what structual changes occurred to produce each positive test, and then answer two questions'
1) Besides alkenes, what other functional group would the unsaturation tests be useful for? Provide the functional group and the reactions that would occur.
2) Suppose a chemist was asked to synthesize a carboxylic acid. He or she is not really sure whether or not the synthesis was sucessful. Can one of the tests utilized in this experiment help with the chemist? WHY?
