Compare and contrast induced forces and dipole-dipole forces. Include a diagram and Compare and contrast ionization energy and electron affinity.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Dipole dipole interactions are the electrostatic interactions between molecules which have permanent dipoles,e.g, HCl. Ion induced dipoles are the similar as dipole dipole, only here ion involved instead of polar and non polar molecules. And so induced forces are stronger than dipole dipole forces because charge of ion is stronger than charge of dipole moment.

Ionisation energy is the energy required to make an atom into a positive ion.On the other hand electron affinity is the energy released when an atom becomes a negative ion.In general 1st ionisation energy increses as we go from left to right across a row of periodic table and decreases as we go from up to down of a column of the periodic table.Electron affinity is the measure of interaction between incoming electrons and nucleus, stronger the interaction s,more energy is released.

When would a molecule with only London dispersion forces/induced dipole-induced dipole have a higher boiling point or melting point than a molecule with stronger intermolecular forces? Some examples of these cases would be nice. My best guess is when the molecule w/ London dispersion forces is a solid compared to something else w/ H-bonding or dipole-dipole that's a gas. But I am not positive about that.
