1) Please write an equation for the formation of methyl salicylate.

2) write an equation with anhydrous cupric sulfate using a reagent alcohol, and another eqution with the same reagent and water.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) FORMATION OF METHYL SALICYLATE (Wintergreen oil):

Methyl Salicylate is esterified with methanol in the presence of a acid catalyst, giving rise to methyl salicylate (also known as Wintergreen oil).

2)

A) Reaction of anhydrous cupric sulfate with alcohol (methanol):

CuSO4 + CH3OH = Cu(OH)2 + CH4SO4

B) Reaction of Anhydrous Cupric sulfate with water: (Results in the formation of Cupric Sulfate Penta Hydrate)

CuSO4 + 5 H2O = CuSO4 . 5 H2O

Anhydrous Cupric sulfate is a common reagent used to test the presence of water in other liquids. As anhydrous Cuproc sulfate is grey-ish white in colour. On interaction with water, the same white colour changes to light blue colour indicating the formation of hydrated cupric sulfate.
