Derivatives of napthylurethane can be prepared from 3-methyl-1-butanol by treating it with napthyl isocyanate. Napthyl isocyanate is moisture sensitive, so the reaction require anhdrous condiions. Alcohol used must be dry.

Procedure: Liquid alcohol is first dried by using anhydrous sodium suplhate for 10 min, then transfer the alcohol in another test tube, then add napthyl isocyanate in half the amount as the alcohol. A precipitate usually forms spontaneously. If the reaction is not spontaneous, place a plug of cotton in the top of the test tube and warm the mixture in a 95
