Why pi-donor ligand interact with metal to get low delta o, but pi-acceptor ligand has high delta o

Homework Answers

Answer #1

pi acceptor: metal to ligand pi bonding. Here the ligand has empty orbitals that can engage in metal to ligand pi bonding. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals(LUMO) of the ligand are the pi orbitals. The energy of bonding here is greater than the corresponding anti-bonding sigma orbitals and the pi orbitals are filled by metal d orbitals.Hence the strength of the bond is higher. Hence a larger delta. Electrons from metal d-orbitals occupy pi orbitals contributed by the ligands.

pi donor: ligand to metal pi bonding. pi electrons from the metals are donated to the metal ion. Here the pi orbitals are filled but the energy is not higher than the anti bonding orbital from sigma bonding. It is filled by the electrons from the metal d orbitals. Being the Highest occupied molecular orbital(HOMO), energy decreases. Hence the smaller delta.

A neutral macrocyclic ligand with four donor atoms produces a red diamagnetic low-spin d 8 complex of Ni(II) if the anion is the weakly coordinating perchlorate ion. When perchlorate is replaced by two thiocyanate ions, SCN −, the complex turns violet and is high-spin with two unpaired electrons. Interpret the change in terms of structure.

Choose and describe a business or product that you think has a particularly high or low profit margin and share a photo of the business/product (or company logo). Why do you think that the profit margin is low or high, and why does it make sense given the company’s business model? If the image is not your own, be sure to cite the source in your description.

It takes a delta launch vehicle 8 min to get to low earth orbit about 100 miles up. If it went in a straight line (it doesn’t) and its speed on orbit was 17,500 mph, how many g’s would the space force service members go through? Ignore the rotation of the Earth and just solve as the rocket is in one dimension. Convert all values to metric and show the conversions. 2. The space force developed a new weapon system...

Why Is Unemployment So High in Europe? Between World War II and the mid-1970s, unemployment in Western Europe was low. From 1960 to 1974, for example, the unemployment rate in France never got as high as 4 percent. The worldwide recession of...
