VCL Alcohol Halogenation- 5-2-2

Comment on the success of the reactions of the alcohols with thionyl chloride. Did they give the desired product? Was the alcohol completely consumed? Explain.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Alcohols can also be converted to alkyl chlorides using thionyl chloride, SOCl2, or phosphorous trichloride, PCl3.Thionyl chloride is preferred for preparing alkyl chlorides from alcohol because the by-products formed in the reaction are SO2 and HCl which are in gaseous form and escape into the atmosphere leaving behind pure alkyl halide.

Yes, the desired product halogenated product is obtained with inversion of configuration.

The halogenation of alcohols takes place via SN2 reaction mechanism,Since the SN2 reaction is a kinetical controlled reaction therefore it may mot happen that the given alchoal amount actually gets consumed.

Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is and enzyme that can catalyze the oxidation of a number of alcohols to the corresponding aldehyde. Two such reactions are: ethanol CH3-CH2OH ————> CH3-CHO butanol CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2OH ———> CH3-CH2-CH2-CHO The Km for ethanol is 10-5M and the Km for butanol is 10-3M. Both substrates bind at the same active site, and the turnover number for each substrate is the same. Two experiments are carried out to determine the Vmax of this amount of enzyme for ethanol oxidation....

Suggest efficient syntheses of (E)- and (Z)-2-heptene from propane and any necessary alcohols or inorganic reagents. This means that not all of the carbon appearing in the final products originates with propane, but may come from the alcohol. You can use any reagents or solvents used for any standard organic reactions that we have covered in class. (basically anything organic chemistry 1)
