Rank these species in order in which they should experience deviation from idealized octahedral geometry:
[CrF6]3-
[Mn(CN)6]3-
[Co(PR3)6]2+

Explain your reasoning.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:- Increasing order of deviation from idealized geometry [CrF6]3- < [Mn(CN)6]3- < [Co(PR3)6]2+ so   [CrF6]3- will experience the least deviation and  [Co(PR3)6]2+ will experience the greatest deviation

The distortion is due to john teller theorem, john teller distortion:-  In a nonlinear molecule, if degenerate orbitals are asymmetrically occupied, a distortion will occur to remove the degeneracy. and the distortion is great for asymmetric eg then asymmetric t2g.
