How do I determine if a bond is polar?
In order to know whether a bond is polar or non-polar, we need to know the electronegativity of the atoms involved in that bond. If the electronegative difference between such bond is more then the bond is polar or if it is less then the bond is non-polar.
Genergally an electronegaive difference between two atoms involved in a bond is more than 0.4 then the bond is polar. If it is less than 0.4, the bond is non-polar.
Lets say O-H bond in water is polar, the oxygen electronegativity is around 3.4 and hydrogen electron negativity is 2.2. The difference (1.2) between them is more than 0.4 so it is a polar bond.
