Question

how do you know if a molecule is polar or non polar?

how do you know if a molecule is polar or non polar?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

By finding the electronegativity difference bonded atoms, one can easily find whether the bond is polar or non polar.

If the difference is above 2, the bonding is considered as ionic,.

If the difference is 1.7, the bond is considered as 50% ionic.

If the difference lies between 0.5 to 1.7 the bond is considered as polar covalent bond.

If the difference is below 0.5, the bond is considered as pure covalent bond

By seeing the bond polarities, one can easily find whether the molecule is polar or not.

Based on your knowledge of functional group solubility (polar vs. non-polar) and the golden rule of solubility – “like dissolves like” predict the solubility of fentanyl (Recall that each polar functional group affects about 5-6 carbons). Determine if the molecule fentanyl is soluble in water (polar) use a reference. Compare your prediction to a reference value (anything over 1 g/100 ml or 10 mg/ml is soluble). (Do not simply give solubility information from one of your references.)
