question: Which bond is polar?
A bond between N and Cl
A bond between Br and Br
A bond between P and O
A bond between H and Te
please help thanks!
Answer :
Polarity of bond decided on the basis of electronegativity difference between the 2 atoms forming that bond.
Larger the electronegativity difference more polar is the bond.
The bond with electronegativity difference 0 is Non-Polar.
Let us calculate Electronegativity difference between each pair of atoms.
a) E(N) = 3.0, E(Cl) = 3.0
Electronegativity difference is 0.
b) E(Br) = 3.0
Homodiatomic molecules like Br2 i.e Br-Br bond are non polar .
c) E(P) = 2.1 E(O) = 3.5
Electronegativity difference = E(O) - E(P) = 3.5 - 2.1 = 1.4
d) E(H) = 2.1 E(Te) = 2.1
Electronegativity difference = E(O) - E(P) = 0
From these electronegativity calculations it's clear that Electronegativity difference is largest 1.4 for P-O bond
and P-O bond is only polar.
