How we identify acidic and neutral component of mixture from liquid liquid extraction / acid neutral separation ( for acid it’s benzoic acid not 2-naphthol) for neutral its naphthalene not biphenyl. Explain detail

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Benzoic acid is highly acidic whereas naphthalene is neutral. Both are soluble in any organic solvent. Benzoic acid can react with NaOH to form benzoate ion but naphthalene can not.

Do during extraction of Benzoic acid and naphthalene at first both the compounds are dissolved in organic solvent in Seperation funnel. Then aqueous NaOH is added to extract. so Benzoic acid react with NaOH and come to the aqueous layer as benzoate ion and naphthalene remains in the organic solvent. Separating aqueous and organic layer both the compounds are separated.
