The allyl radical has how many pi electrons?

a). 1.    b). 2.     c). 3.    d). 4

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Allyl radical has the formula CH2 CH -- CH2

This radical has a double covalent bond out of which 1 bond is sigma and the other one pi bond. This pi bond contains 2 pi electrons. The odd electron present in p orbital is in conjugation with the double bond and can undergo delocalisation as shown below.

CH2 CH -- CH2   C H2 --CH   CH2

Hence the total number of pi electrons = 2+1 =3
