What technique can be used to separate the following compositions of pair of compouunds?

Salicylic acid (mp. 160 degree C ) and acetylsalicylic acid d (mp 141 degee C) 5:95 mixture.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

acetylesalicylic acid produced from salicilic acid. durin this reaction little salicylic acid may present after the reaction. SO we need to purify it form product.

THis can be done by various techniques like coloum chromatography, fractional distilation but the simplest method is recrystalization.

the solubilty of acetylesalicylic acid and salicylic acid are different in ethyle aceatate, acetylesalicylic acid is least soluble in ethyle acetate but  salicylic acid is verymuch soluble. SO take the mixture (5:95) and add little ethylacetate solvent and heat untill it gives clear solution. WHile cooling, the least soluble acetylesalicylic acid will precipitate out from the mixture as pure compound. In the solution mostly salicylic acid will be there.

Azeotropes can be used to shift chemical equilibria by removing products. Treatment of 1-butanol with acetic acid in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst results in formation of butyl acetate and water. The mixture of 1-butanol/butyl acetate/ water forms a ternary azeotrope that boils at 90.7 degree C. This azeotrope separates into two layers; the upper layer is largely butyl acetate, along with 11% 1-butanol, and the lower layer is largely water. Butyl acetate forms by an equilibrium...

Overproduction of uric acid in the body can be an indication of cell breakdown. This may be an advance indication of illness such as gout, leukemia, or lymphoma.† Over a period of months, an adult male patient has taken twelve blood tests for uric acid. The mean concentration was x = 5.35 mg/dl. The distribution of uric acid in healthy adult males can be assumed to be normal, with σ = 1.75 mg/dl. (a) Find a 95% confidence interval for...
