Describe a method that can be used to separate each of the following mixtures of metal ions.

A. Ag+, Pb2+

B. Mn2+, Fe3+

C. Ni2+, Al3+

D. Cu2+, Ni2+

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A. Ag+, Pb2+

basic media --> OH- excess will precipitate Pb(OH)2 and leave Ag+ in solution

For Ag+, add S-2 ions to form Ag2S

B. Mn2+, Fe3+

Add NaSCN , so SCN- anf Fe+3 preciptates

Mn+2 remains in solution

preicpitate in basic media to form Mn(OH)2

C. Ni2+, Al3+

add Na2CO3, this precipitates NiCO3

for Al3+, add OH- to form Al(OH)3

D. Cu2+, Ni2+

add H2S in acidic media!, so CuS precipitates, Ni+2 remains in solution

in basic media, add (NH4)2S so Ni(OH)2 forms

In biology, the roles of transition metal ions can be broadly grouped into two classifications: redoxchemistry (catalysis, electron transfer, etc.) and acid-base chemistry (catalysis, structural, etc.). (a) List three metal ions that commonly participate in biological redox chemistry, and give examplesof how they participate. (b) Compare this list to metal ions commonly participating in acid-base chemistry. Discuss the overlapof these two groups of metal ions.
