What causes different sizes of silver nanoparticles to appear as different colors in solution?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Different sizes of silver nanoparticles appear as different colors in solution because silver nanoparticles are easily aggregated and when the aggregation occurs the colour of the nanoparticles changes. These particles absorb and scatter light very efficiently. After aggregation, the strong interaction between nanoparticles with light occurs due to the conduction electrons present on the surface of the silver metal undergo movements when they are excited by lights of different wavelengths.

In many transparent materials, dispersion causes different colors (wavelengths) of light to travel at different speeds. This can cause problems in fiber-optic communications systems where pulses of light must travel very long distances in glass. Assuming a fiber is made of silicate crown glass (see figure below), calculate the difference in travel times that two short pulses of light take to travel 11.0 km in the fiber if the first pulse has a wavelength of 700 nm and the second...

What happens to the solid copper and the aqueous silver from the silver nitrate solution during the course of the reaction? A) The copper changed from an aqueous ion form to a solid, metallic state. The metallic silver from the silver nitrate solution became aqueous ions. B) The copper changed from a solid, metallic, unreacted state to and aqeuous ion form. In a city, there are three colors of taxicabs: black (B), grey (G), and silver (S). In this city, 0.4 of taxis are black, 0.35 of taxis are grey, and 0.25 of taxis are silver. A pedestrian is hit by a taxi but does not see its color. However, there is a witness who says it was a black taxi. The witness is pretty good at identifying the color of a taxi. The probability the witness will get the color...
