what is phenolphthalein and what colors does it turn in different pH environments

Answer #1

Phenolphthalein is an acid base pH indicator and is used to measure the pH of solution. Its molecular formula is C20H14O4. It belongs to pthalein family and is synthesized by fusion of phenol and pthalic anhydride. This reaction requires sulfuric acid or zinc chloride.

Phenolphthalein is colourless below pH 8.2. However, at pH above 8.2, it will turn pink in color. It is there fore used in titration experiments in biology. It can also be added to mcirobial media to analyse change in biochemical reactions.

How does a strong acid/base titration change, if congo red is used instead of phenolphthalein? For eg– We begin by creating 0.1 M NaOH solution. Then, we standardize NaOH and titrate w/KHP. Then, we use this to find the mass of KHP in the unknown. This is all done using phenolphthalein. What would happen if we used congo red instead?
